FUTUREFLIGHT CENTRAL FACILITY NAME
NASA's FutureFlight Central was formerly named Surface Development and Test Facility (SDTF). As the project approached operational phase, a more appropriate name was needed. Customer insights aided the creation of our new name, FutureFlight Central.

Attributes communicated by the name
  • This is a place that focuses on the future of flight.
  • It is a center of activity and collaboration.
  • The name positions the facility as the central piece of NASA's total system of aviation support tools.
  • The name has a sense of dignity and authority that aligns with the NASA image.
  • The name reinforces NASA's commitment to the future of aviation.
A symbol of partnership

FutureFlight Central represents not only a collaborative experience for customers, but a sense of collaboration and partnership between NASA and everyone who will use the facility.

A Stanton Harke Memorial

Beyond the expression of customer wishes and NASA's mission, the FutureFlight Central name intends to honor the memory of Stan Harke. Stan was described as a class act; a visionary who made everyone feel included. FutureFlight Central embodies those very core traits. Stan's vision for the facility was unlimited. He was adamant that it not be seen as simply a training facility, but as a place for creation and enhancement. This sense of unlimited possibilities is inherent in the name. Stan was committed to the ability to create full-stress human situations as a way of preparing for the future - as a way of saving lives. Identifying the facility as a Central place where people of all levels can come together to experience and create the future of flight is a direct reflection of Stan's vision.
