ATD-2 Phase 3 Training in North Texas Area
August 9, 2019

ATD-2 presentation to training participants

The Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 (ATD-2) Phase 3 Demonstration includes the participation of multiple Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control (ATC) facilities and airline operations centers: Dallas-Love Field Tower (DAL), Dallas-Fort Worth Tower (DFW), Dallas-Fort Worth Terminal Radar Approach Control (D10), Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZFW), and American Airlines Integrated Operations Center (IOC) and Southwest Airlines Network Operations Center (NOC). The Phase 3 Demo will proceed as a series of three micro-phases, each of which introduces additional capabilities. To prepare for the next micro-phase, NASA conducted training from June 17 – July 19, 2019 for over 80 supervisors, controllers, traffic management specialists, and air traffic operations center specialists representing the above facilities. The training included briefings and hands-on use of the ATD-2 Metroplex Planner capabilities, and a demonstration of the interaction and work flow process between airline and ATC. The demonstration focused on the various stages of operational use of the Metroplex planner beginning from the airline requesting a reroute to ATC approving and processing the reroute. Users had the opportunity to provide input and refine procedures to be used in the system, and gave positive feedback on the new capabilities. (POC: Keenan Roach, Greg Juro, Bob Staudenmeier)
