ATD-2 begins shadow sessions with Phase 3 Field demo partners in North Texas
May 4, 2018

On April 10, 2018, NASA met with field demo partners of the Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) Phase 3 effort at Southwest Airlines (SWA) headquarters in Dallas, Texas. SWA is the primary air carrier partner at the Dallas-Love Field Airport, and co-lead with American Airlines (AA) in the ATD-2 Phase 3 field demonstration. The NASA team introduced the ATD-2 concept and together with the participants, converged over the near and mid-term objectives as well as next steps in the joint venture. The NASA team toured SWA’s Network Operations Control (NOC). On April 12, the NASA team met with Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) team members at the DFW Board facilities. The NASA team visited the two terminals for which DFW performs ramp management functions (the other three terminal ramp operations are managed by AA). DFW personnel introduced the NASA team to the terminal operations at their facility and discussed potential areas where ATD-2 technology may help. Partners expressed strong interest in ATD-2 capabilities and in beginning a collaborative development process. A follow-up meeting will take place at the NASA North Texas (NTX) facility to introduce the Ramp Traffic Console (RTC) capability and obtain initial feedback. The NASA team plans to regularly meet with all North Texas Field Demo Partners to develop the Integrated Arrivals, Departure, and Surface (IADS) terminal departure capability and technology via the agile requirements identification process used for ATD-2 Phases 1 and 2.
