First Operational Shadow Evaluation Completed for the ATD-2 Phase 1 Field Demonstration
August 31, 2017

ATD-2 staff in discussion

On August 23, 2017, the first Operational Shadow Evaluation session for the Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) Phase 1 Field Demonstration (OSE1) period was conducted in the NASA ATD-2 Lab (CLTlab) located at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The purpose of OSE1 period, which began July 10, 2017, is to enable Field Demo Partners to interact with the ATD-2 Integrated Arrival/Departure/Surface (IADS) system in their operational environment to gain experience and familiarity with the system prior to the Phase 1 Field Demonstration starting in late September 2017. Field Demo Partners from the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), CLT Airport Operations, American Airlines (AAL), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Headquarters, and CLT Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) participated in the OSE1 session. The agenda included a review of the current OSE1 plan and procedures, and recent software modifications to tune the system for operational use. At the end of the day, there was a discussion of the remaining actions to be completed prior to the Phase 1 Field Demonstration, and the plan during the Demonstration period. The second OSE1 session will be conducted the last week of September, where an Operational Readiness Decision will be evaluated prior to the start of the Phase 1 Field Demonstration. On August 22, 2017, the Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) Technical Support Team engineers visited the field site at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to familiarize themselves with the ATD-2 Integrated Arrival/Departure/Surface (IADS) systems deployed at CLT, including the network components that enable the IADS concept demonstration. The ATD-2 Technical Support Team will support the ATD-2 IADS systems users at Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air carrier, and airport operational facilities across CLT and the FAA's Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center in Leesburg, Virginia, during the field demonstrations. The Team toured the American Airlines CLT Ramp Tower, the FAA CLT Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and TRACON, the Charlotte Airport Operations Gate Management facility, and the NASA ATD-2 Lab (CLTlab), and also met Field Demo Partners. The Team discussed procedures and logistics related to end user technical support and will continue to train through the Operational Shadow Evaluation (OSE1) period. (POC: Shivanjli Sharma)
