NASCENT Progress Meeting at American Airlines
August 23, 2017
The NASA Airspace Technology Demonstration 3 (ATD-3) team met with American Airlines (AAL) August 17-18, 2017, at the AAL Integrated Operations Center in Fort Worth, Texas to discuss the analysis and future plans for the National Airspace System Constraint Evaluation and Notification Tool (NASCENT). Under a Space Act Agreement between NASA and AAL, AAL provided Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) data for advisories sent from flight dispatchers to their pilots for March and May 2017. NASA provided an analysis of this data, comparing advisories for origin and destination airports and city pairs, and the timing of the ACARS messages with respect to when the advisories first appeared, were accepted by ATC Coordinators, when an ACARS message sent by dispatchers, and when a flight plan amendment was observed. AAL was able to use this data to understand when there was greater participation in using NASCENT advisories, and the amount of corresponding time- and fuel-savings achieved/lost. AAL has provided additional ACARS data from June and July. AAL is keenly interested in seeing the success of the Space Act Agreement with NASA and is exploring possibilities to incorporate NASCENT software into their internal infrastructure and operations.
