Remote ATD-2 Briefing and Demo to Stakeholders
July 27, 2017
On July 20, 2017, NASA provided an Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) remote briefing and demonstration to over 80 stakeholders. Participants included Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) headquarters representatives from NextGen, Program Management, Surface, System Operations, and System Requirements organizations, and FAA and National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) members of the Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM) Ops Team. Also in attendance were air carrier representatives operating at the Charlotte Airport (CLT) field demo site, pilot unions, and various other industry stakeholders. The briefing focused on the schedulers used and the integration of the two major ATD-2 prototype system components: the Surface Trajectory-Based Operations (STBO) subsystem and the Time-Based Flow Management/Integrated Departure Arrival Capability (TBFM/IDAC) subsystem. The NASA team also briefed the development of the scheduling algorithms, and the expected ATD-2 procedures for surface departure metering and the Call For Release process between Charlotte Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and Washington Center. NASA demonstrated the ATD-2 user interfaces and concept of use with the latest software running with live CLT traffic. Remote ATD-2 demonstrations will be hosted bi-monthly, with the goals of showcasing the current release of system capability and soliciting input from stakeholders that can be used to improve the ATD-2 system and identify areas where more detailed discussion is warranted.
