NASA Researchers Hold Collaboration Workshop with South Korean Research Collaborators
November 3, 2016

On October 24-26, 2016, NASA Ames Research Center hosted a joint workshop with representatives from the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA) and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The meeting included researchers and managers in airport surface research, NASA's Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) project, and NASA Headquarters to share progress on collaborative research conducted in the past six months, and also to discuss future plans for collaborating on airport surface and terminal area research under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between NASA and KAIA/KARI in November 2014. The KARI delegation briefed their current air traffic management research, including the Management on Integrated Operations of Departure, Arrival, and Surface (MIDAS) project, which has a similar research focus as ATD-2. The NASA team provided briefings and demonstrations of the ATD-2 system surface optimization algorithms and fast-time simulation and modeling capabilities. The teams discussed specific areas of research collaboration to advance NASA's surface research portfolio as well as provide insights into how KAIA/KARI can further develop their high-fidelity surface and terminal air traffic simulation and research tools. The next joint meeting is tentatively scheduled for May 2017 in Korea. (POC: Yoon Jung)
