FAA Advanced Electronic Flight Strips (AEFS) training systems setup in NASA labs
October 6, 2016

On September 26-28, 2016, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contractors from DTIS Corporation configured two Advanced Electronic Flight Strips (AEFS) training systems and then conducted two days of training for the NASA Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 (ATD-2) team. The prototype AEFS system was created and designed by the FAA's William J. Hughes Technical Center's (WJHTC's) Terminal Second Level Engineering team to replace paper flight progress strips that air traffic controllers in the towers use, giving them a paperless system and providing a single source of collective information. Under the FAA's Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM) program office's early implementation effort, AEFS is being deployed on a limited basis and will include deployment to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in 2017 to support NASA's ATD-2 Field Demonstration. An interface between the ATD-2 and AEFS systems is being developed to provide scheduling information electronically. The ATD-2 team will be using these AEFS training systems to develop software requirements for the field demonstrations. The AEFS training systems at NASA are currently configured for Cleveland Airport, and accommodates a Traffic Management Coordinator (TMC) and three controller positions (i.e., local, ground, and clearance delivery). NASA's North Texas Research Station (NTX) will receive one of the training systems to be setup in the ATD-2 lab for deployment testing. (POC: Michelle Eshow)
