Certification Criteria for Advanced Rotorcraft Experiment at the Vertical Motion Simulator

Civilian rotorcraft engineers are incorporating advanced flight control systems (AdFC) such as fly-by-wire or fly-by-light as part of their new rotorcraft designs. With the advent of AdFC, it is possible to provide a very stable platform with excellent handling qualities. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the impacts of AdFC on in-flight performance. The Certification Criteria for Advanced Rotorcraft (CCAR) experiment was performed at the NASA Ames Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) from August 15-September 7, 2016. The goal of the experiment was to provide guidance to support certification criteria of rotorcraft AdFC systems in the presence of moderate-to-high workload scenarios. In order to achieve this goal, three FAA and Sikorsky pilots flew various scenarios and aircraft configurations. The configurations compared pilot performance using analog and digital displays, one and two pilots, and various control systems. The experiment is planned to resume in January 2017. FAA hosts ATD-2 Testing Kick-off Meeting at William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC)

On September 13, 2016, the NASA Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 (ATD-2) team met with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) representatives to kick-off discussions on the Time-Based Flow Management (TBFM) testing strategy for field demonstrations. NASA is proposing integrating the ATD-2 surface system (Terminal Fight Data Manager (TFDM) stand-in with the operational TBFM Integrated Departure Arrival Capability (IDAC) web services routing tool (WSRT) capability to enable demonstration of 3T-like integration in the field. The FAA is finalizing the implementation design, targeting TBFM release 4.7. FAA participants included the Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) Research Transition Team (RTT) co-lead and representatives from the FAA's William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC) TBFM and Surface Trajectory-Based Operations (STBO) system support and test team. NASA briefed the ATD-2 system and the FAA provided an overview of the TBFM and STBO lab where release testing is conducted. Follow-on meetings will focus on setting up the ATD-2 surface system in the test lab and detailing test procedures. (POC: Jane Thipphavong)
