ATD-2 Engineering Shadow Evaluation Session with Air Traffic Control Tower and American Airline Ramp Controllers
August 31, 2016

NASA's Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 (ATD-2) researchers hosted a second session of engineering shadow evaluations with Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and American Airlines (AAL) ramp controllers on August 23-25, 2016 at the NASA CLT Lab. ATCT controllers and Traffic Management Coordinators (TMCs) were shown progress of the ATD-2 surface automation system, called Surface Trajectory-Based Operations (STBO), and details of the surface modeling, timelines and information processing that created the displays. The agenda for AAL participants included a description of the Tactical Surface Scheduler and an overview of the ramp management user interfaces. Participants offered valuable feedback on the ATD-2 system and helped refine requirements for future development. John Greene, Acting Chief of CLT ATCT and Terminal Approach Control (TRACON) also attended and participated in the discussions of ATD-2 tools and technologies. The last engineering shadow session will be held September 20 and 22, 2016, combining both ATCT and AAL participants. (POC: Al Capps, Savvy Verma)

Visit from Korean Airlines
August 31, 2016

The Aviation Systems Division hosted visitors from Korean Airlines, In Gyu Kim (Vice President of Safety and Security), Hyuck You (General Manager of Safety), and Yun Ik Jang (Safety Team Manager), on August 30-31, 2016. Division researchers gave presentations on current research. William Chan presented Air Traffic Management (ATM) weather research, with emphasis on turbulence modeling. Kee Palopo briefed the Shadow Mode Assessment using Realistic Technologies for the National Airspace System (SMART-NAS) Test Bed. Chester Gong briefed the Airspace Technology Demonstration-3 (ATD-3) and the Dynamic Routes for Arrivals in Weather (DRAW) capability. Dr. Yoon Jung briefed ATD-2. The visitors also participated in presentations from the Human Systems Integration and the Intelligent Systems Divisions. (POC: William Chan)
