Part-Task 6 Human-in-the-Loop Simulation of Detect-and-avoid Displays and Algorithms for UAS Integration in the National Airspace System
June 15, 2016

A human-in-the-loop simulation evaluation of detect-and-avoid (DAA) displays and algorithms that aid Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) pilots in remaining well clear of all traffic concluded data collection on June 14, 2016. A total of 16 UAS pilots participated in the simulation in the Distributed Simulation Research Lab at NASA Ames Research Center. The simulation supports the final verification and validation (V&V) of detect and avoid alerting, guidance, and display requirements for integrating UAS with the National Airspace System (NAS) under NASA's UAS in the NAS project, led by the Human Systems Integration (HSI) sub-project, with significant participation from the Integrated Test & Evaluation (IT&E) and Separation assurance/Sense and avoid Interoperability (SSI) sub-projects. This work supports RTCA Special Committee 228's development of Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for future detect and avoid systems.

The SSI sub-project developed and investigated algorithms that provide the UAS DAA capabilities. Two different display options were evaluated, with the detect and avoid display either separate from the ground-control station's main display, or integrated within the ground-control station display. The simulation also tested traffic with different equipage levels, i.e. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), Transponder, and non-cooperative aircraft, that require detection and alerting based on airborne radar. The results of the study will inform key research questions for the UAS community, including final V&V of surveillance and guidance requirements for the DAA minimum operational performance standards.
