May 19, 2016
Mr. Sam Coats, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), toured the NASA North Texas Research Station (NTX) on May 10, 2016. Accompanying Mr. Coats was Executive Vice President of Operations, Mr. Jim Crites, and Mr. Robert Horton, Vice President, Environmental Affairs. After receiving an overview of the NTX facility and its past and present projects, Mr. Coats visited the NTX laboratory to observe repeater displays of NASA systems that local FAA facilities use. He was also briefed on the Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 (ATD-2), Integrated Arrival/Departure/Surface (IADS) operations, and shown displays running with live data from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The visit concluded with a presentation on Novel Surveillance research conducted at NTX, which provides a low-cost way of determining aircraft departure status at airports that lack surface surveillance systems. The presentations highlighted the cooperative work of government agencies, airlines, and airports in making field demonstrations successful. (POC: Paul Borchers)
