SARDA human-in-the-loop shakedown simulation of Charlotte Airport operations

The Spot and Runway Departure Advisor (SARDA) team, in coordination with US Airways, successfully completed the 3-day shakedown human-in-the-loop simulation of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) at FutureFlight Central, NASA Ames Research Center's facility for airport simulation. The simulation covered all aspects of surface operations of CLT, including ramp operations managed by the ramp controllers and movement area traffic managed by ATC tower controllers. The objective of the shakedown simulation was to test integration of software/hardware components, verify operational procedures for both controllers and pilots, and check out the traffic scenarios. Ramp controller positions were configured to use the display that shows the traffic on the surface, a paper map, and paper flight strips to control push-back of aircraft within the alleyway (where surveillance is not available). The out-the-window (OTW) visuals showed the view from the US Airways ramp tower. A US Airways ramp controller also participated in the simulation as subject matter expert and provided NASA researchers with feedback on realism as well as valuable suggestions for future enhancement. The actual simulation for data collection is scheduled in December. (POC: Ty Hoang)
