NASA researchers prepare for FIAT shakedown simulations
NASA has developed a suite of advanced arrival management technologies combining time-based scheduling with controller- and flight deck-based precision spacing capabilities that allow fuel-efficient arrival operations during periods of high throughput. Human-in-the-loop simulations were completed the week of October 28 to evaluate the performance of the ATD-1 system, specifically assessing the new airborne spacing algorithm (ASTAR12) in a variety of wind conditions and traffic scenarios. The study also aims to gather feedback on the operational feasibility of using ASTAR12 for airborne spacing operations integrated with the ground-based controller automation tools. Participants included 8 controllers and 20 pseudo pilots, who assisted in refining the scenarios, phraseology, and procedures to be used during data collection. The full data collection period is scheduled November 13-21. (POC:Jane Thipphavong)
