The Speed Agile Concept Demonstrator (SACD) program won Aviation Week Magazine's prestigious Laureate Award for Aeronautics and Propulsion for 2013. The SACD is a C-130 sized cargo aircraft concept that can take off and land on very short, unprepared, runways. To accomplish this mission, the aircraft requires a combination of advanced flight control effectors, flight control system, and guidance displays. The team, which included NASA and Boeing and was led by the United States Air Force, tested these concepts in a two-week piloted simulation at the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) in the Summer of 2011. The VMS simulation team worked with Boeing for several months to integrate the Boeing SACD model and guidance display with the VMS simulation environment and develop the simulated visual environment, cockpit, and test conditions. They also provided Boeing with technical advice on the guidance display based on prior work done at the VMS on pursuit displays. Boeing Test Pilots evaluated the aircraft’s handling qualities and performance using a series of rigorous flight tasks. The SACD team was presented with the award at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. For more information, please see the following stories: (POC: Bimal Aponso, Katharine Lee)
