University of Texas at Arlington meets with NASA to propose regional aviation research collaboration
March 28, 2012

Dr. Stephen Mattingly, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), has proposed a regional aviation organization sited on the Arlington campus. The Aviation Innovation, Research and Education (AIRE) Center would develop research activities identified as top priority needs by the Center partners, develop education programs and outreach initiatives that meet aviation community needs, and disseminate research findings through on-site and online seminars and national and international aviation and transportation conferences. NASA Ames North Texas Research Center (NTX) personnel were invited to attend two meetings (January 30 and March 19, 2012) to describe current work at NTX and provide input on topics AIRE could address. Also in attendance were: Dr. Jean-Pierre Bardet, Dean of Engineering at UTA; Jim Crites, Executive Vice President, Operations, DFW Airport; Teresa Bruner, FAA Southwest Region Administrator; and several other representatives from the FAA Southwest Region offices. The group suggested that UTA sponsor a series of forums to discuss practical certification and education challenges that aviation professionals and government officials face now and in the future. These discussions would establish areas for further research and academic programs. Two specific topics discussed were on-site repair and certification of composite materials and the use and integration of UAVs in the north Texas airspace. (POC: Paul Borchers)
