Matthew Blanken is a Simulation Engineer at the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) at NASA Ames Research Center. As a Simulation Engineer, he supports researchers that utilize the VMS by setting up the simulation environment, tailoring the response of the motion system, verifying vehicle math models, and bearing ultimate responsibility for every aspect of a simulation project from start through data collection. Prior to joining NASA, he was a contractor employee at Ames and worked primarily in the fields of Air Traffic Management and Unmanned Aerial Systems supporting research being conducted in the Aviation Systems Division. In this work, he supported many human-in-the-loop studies where air traffic controllers and pilots would engage in simulated airspace studies using novel tools developed at NASA to improve the national airspace system. He earned his undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering from San Jose State University and is a member of the Sigma Gamma Tau National Aerospace Honor Society. He is a co-author on several American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) publications and is a member of the AIAA Lighter-than-Air Systems Technical Committee. He is also an avid R/C hobbyist and car aficionado.
