BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Karl Bilimoria

Dr. Karl Bilimoria is an aerospace engineer in the Flight Trajectory Dynamics and Controls branch at NASA Ames Research Center, where he has worked in the areas of air traffic management, spacecraft handling qualities, and space traffic management.

Dr. Bilimoria has received numerous professional awards, including the NASA Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal for his research on airborne self-separation. He is a co-inventor of the Future Air traffic management Concepts Evaluation Tool (FACET), which has received two U.S. patents, the NASA Government Invention of the Year Award, the NASA Software of the Year Award, the FAA Excellence in Aviation Research Award, and the AIAA Aerospace Software Engineering Award. Dr. Bilimoria also led a team that conducted a series of piloted simulation studies in the high-fidelity Vertical Motion Simulator to build a knowledge base of pilot control systems and cockpit displays for the next generation of crewed spacecraft; over 30 astronauts from the Space Shuttle and Apollo programs participated in these experiments. He received the astronauts’ Silver Snoopy award in recognition of this work.

Dr. Bilimoria earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Virginia Tech in 1986. Prior to joining Ames in 1994, he was on the aerospace engineering faculty at Arizona State University as an assistant professor and research scientist, working in the area of flight dynamics and control. At NASA Ames, Dr. Bilimoria has guided the research of graduate students from California Polytechnic State University, Delft University (Netherlands), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of California. He also has served as a Visiting Lecturer for the International Space University.

Dr. Bilimoria has published over 100 technical articles on the dynamics and control of aerospace vehicles. He is the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Air Transportation and previously served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, as well as Guest Editor for a special issue of the Air Traffic Control Quarterly. Dr. Bilimoria is a recipient of AIAA's Sustained Service Award. He has served on four AIAA national committees, including the Publications Committee where he chaired the Books sub-committee. Dr. Bilimoria is a Fellow of the AIAA.
